How long has it been since you’ve jumped out of your seat and felt truly free? When was the last time you danced without a care in the world, just for the sheer pleasure of it? Few garments and collections carry a message of liberation that simultaneously evokes memories of the UK's golden age of clubbing, but Charles Jeffrey's LOVERBOY is a fusion of nonchalant actions and the dark allure of the night.

In 2021, the world first saw the LOVERBOY concept in two collections where cotton tartan, interventions, and a notion of agile rigidity took center stage. As if soundtracked by Visage, the garments represented a liberation from the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, proving that the skin (and the soul) will always find a way to escape and merge with the darkness of night to reveal its true nature.

The team accompanying Charles Jeffrey employed innovative techniques for manipulating cotton fabrics, creating spike-like patterns on berets, jackets, and Bermuda shorts; and they capitalized on the trend of combining different tartan patterns (previously used by designers like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen) to create garments with elegant cuts that were made casual by the nature of the fabric.

And if that wasn't enough, the interventions and prints of artworks created in their studio, accompanied by fabric tearing techniques, only amplified the frequencies of the noise that had been silenced during the night. LOVERBOY shouted what the clubs had muted during the pandemic and gave us garments whose impact is still present in popular music and on the runways of 2021 and beyond.
